Oilfield coiled tubing is a continuous length of tubing that is wound onto a spool and used in a variety of well servicing operations. Increasingly, the coiled tubing unit is used for many well intervention operations and certain drilling applications. Coiled tubing oilfield technology was initially developed for working on live, producing wells. More recently, this technology has gained wider acceptance for an expanding range of workover and drilling applications and for its ability to reduce overall costs.
Coiled tubing is available in diameters of 0.75 to 4.5 in - 2 in. is the most common size. It may range in length from 2,000 to more than 30,000 ft [600 to 9,000 m].
